Note: All cosmetic treatments are medical procedures and therefore come with risks and downtime. It is important you are aware of these before undergoing any procedure. All results vary between individuals.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has gained significant popularity in recent years for its potential to rejuvenate skin, stimulate hair growth, and accelerate healing. But who exactly is a good candidate for PRP. In this blog post, we’ll look into PRP therapy, discuss its benefits, and help you determine if it’s the right treatment for you.

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, a component in blood that is rich in a type of cell called platelets. Platelets are cells in the blood which have the primary purpose of clotting blood when there is bleeding. Platelets also contain essential biomolecules, enzymes, and active growth factors necessary for wound healing and regeneration of tissues.

In PRP treatments, platelets are highly concentrated to allow large amounts of growth factors and various other proteins which can stimulate the healing process. The principle of PRP treatment is that it delivers all the necessary compounds in high concentrations and volumes directly to the site of concern.

PRP therapy involves using a patient’s own blood to promote healing and rejuvenation. The process includes drawing a small amount of blood, processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, turning it into ‘liquid gold’ and then injecting this platelet-rich plasma into the targeted areas. PRP can either be injected into the skin or delivered into the skin with Skin Needling or with laser treatments. PRP is rich in growth factors that stimulate cell repair, collagen production, and tissue regeneration.

Who is a Good Candidate for PRP?

PRP is suitable for all skin types, colours, and ages. It is always best to be guided by your health practitioner in terms of what treatment will assist your needs the best.

Signs of Aging:

Individuals with fine lines, wrinkles, or sagging skin can benefit from PRP’s collagen-boosting properties.

Acne Scars:

Those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and improve skin texture.

Sun Damage:

People with sun-damaged skin seeking to restore a healthy, youthful glow.

What areas can PRP treat?

-Face
-Lower and upper eye lids
-Neck
-Back of the hands
-Decolletage

Who May Not Be Suitable for PRP?

While PRP is safe for many, it may not be suitable for everyone. Because the treatment utilises your own platelets, we recommend you are in your best health when you have the treatment. You do not want to reinject sick platelets that will not be of benefit for you. Ensure you are well rested, hydrated, have not drunk and alcohol, have had a nutritious diet and haven’t had any recent illness. Individuals with the following conditions should consult with a healthcare professional before considering PRP:

– Blood Disorders: Conditions like thrombocytopenia, anaemia, or other blood-related disorders.
– Cancer: Active cancer or undergoing chemotherapy.
– Infections: Active infections or skin conditions in the treatment area.
– Pregnancy: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid PRP.

When do you see PRP results?

PRP will begin working under the skin immediately, making new cells to help improve the surface layers of skin. Visible results will be seen between six to 12 weeks post-treatment, with continued improvements lasting for up to one year.

For best results, we recommend an initial course of three treatments at 4-6 weekly intervals, then annual maintenance. Additional treatments may be required depending on treatment area size and your desired results.

If you’re considering PRP, the best way to determine if you’re a good candidate is to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors or nurses at Ministry of Skin. Because ageing is multifactorial, you may require different modalities in combination to treat your overall concerns so it is best to consult with our team to optimise effective solutions. Our experienced team will assess your individual needs and guide you through the process to ensure you achieve the best possible results.
