PRP is always on the side line, showing great results in  many different aspects of aesthetics??

Its “natural” and this has drawn a lot of interest, especially as its use can be so varied in selectively improving and healing many concerns.

It was launched into the media around 2013 by Kim Kardashian when her Vampire facelift triggered interest in its application within Aesthetics.

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. Platelets occur naturally in everyone’s blood. They have many roles but the one used in aesthetics it is ability to stimulate growth factors and potentially collagen production leading to rejuvenated, plumper tighter skin – LOVE!!!

We are born with a wonderful amount of collagen and elastin but its production diminishes by about 1% every year from birth and this is significantly expedited in women after the menopause.

The search for treatments that stimulate the body’s production of good quality collagen and elastin is the dream find within aesthetic medicine – Kylie: Practice Manager

PRP has been used for many years in general medicine for wound healing and in joint, cartilage and ligament healing. It has shown great ability to expedite healing and improve inflammation and tissue quality and function. From these exciting results its properties are now used in the skin.

Dr Caroline Expresses: The great thing about PRP is that it uses your own body’s regenerative powers so risks of allergy or reactions is negligible and this is why it is becoming so popular.

The procedure involves taking a sample of your blood as if you were having a normal blood test. This sample is then spun in a centrifuge to separate out and concentrate the platelets which are then injected into skin having been numbed with local anaesthetic cream. The platelets then act as growth factors to stimulate collagen and elastin.

The procedure is comfortable and downtime is about 1-4 days.

Straight after the procedure the area injected is swollen, this can be confronting, but this swelling reduces over 24 hours and is mainly due to a volume of liquids having been injected. The biggest risk is a bruise which can occur with any treatment that involves needles. Like any bruise these can last up to 2 weeks.

Most clients require one treatment a month for each decade of life as a starting point then annual treatments, but in practice we usually do one a month for 3 months. Best results are seen 9-12 months later as it takes time for the collagen stimulation and growth to take effect.  We then recommend repeated treatments every 12-18 months for maintenance as unfortunately we do continue to age! This is the same for any collagen stimulating procedure.

Our most common use of PRP is its use in combination with other treatments eg: laser or micro needling. We find in combination it actually reduces downtime and long term aesthetic results are better.

In our practice the commonest area we inject is the eye area – Cosmetic Nurse Chloe

This eye area often has limited treatments available as the tissue is so thin and delicate so PRP is a wonderful option. We can inject all the way up to the eyelashes on both the upper and lower lids and out over the crow’s feet. We can inject any area of the face but we most frequently concentrate on areas that are showing signs of skin laxity and wrinkling such as around the mouth and upper lip, cheeks and jowls. We also inject other body areas e.g.: neck, décolletage and hands after all you want body harmony, a great face can look out of place if the neck, chest and hands do not match.

Working on the principal that PRP has the amazing ability to stimulate growth factors, these properties mean that PRP can also be used for the following with great results:

  • Scar Improvement
  • Acne Scarring
  • Hair loss
  • Stretch Marks
  • Ulcers
  • Vitiligo
  • Vaginal G Spot!!

  • Uses your own platelets
  • No risks of allergy or reaction
  • Low downtime
  • Improves skin quality, plumpness and radiance
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Can use anywhere where there is skin
  • Use on any skin type or colour
  • Can reduce downtime and improve results of other aesthetic procedures
  • Has options to treat other body concerns

  • Results are slow
  • Does not add volume to the skin

Ensure you get it done at a Doctor led practice which adhere to strict infection control guidelines and use devices that prevent cross contamination of bodily fluids!!

The appearance of an aged face is multifactorial. It occurs due to the combined result of the concentration and quality of collagen and elastin in the skin, the volume under the skin (made up of fat, ligaments, fascia, muscle and bone). Plus it is influenced by environmental factors such as sun and smoking and internal factors such as hormones, gut health, stress and diet.

To prevent, correct or maintain ageing we recommend collagen stimulating treatments every 12-18 months TO EVERYONE OF ANY AGE HAVING ANY AESTHETIC PROCEDURE.

With this not only will you maintain your skin laxity, plumpness and glow in 3-5 years when you should look older but you will most likely look younger than you do today with the added benefit of then requiring less antiwrinkle and dermal filler treatments – so invest in your collagen!!!
