Lipodissolve is a TGA approved treatment program that involves the injection of a fat dissolving medication into small unwanted fatty areas. The medication, called deoxycolic acid, is a component of your natural bile, and therefore has the ability to dissolve the subcutaneous fat in the area injected, to give a more toned and contoured appearance. The commonest area for us is the double chin resulting in a more contoured neck profile and jawline.

The treatment is best used for pockets of fat that cannot be eliminated by exercise and nutritional therapy alone. It is not a medication for weight loss.
For all lipodissolve procedures, a Cosmetic consultation is first required first to discuss the procedure, results and suitability.

Lipodissolve FAQ

What is Lipodissolve and how does it work?

Lipodissolve is a procedure where a prescription medication containing deoxycholic acid is injected into an area of unwanted fat. The solution breaks open the fat compartments and liquefies the fat which is then taken away in the bloodstream to be metabolized and excreted by the body.

Which Lipodissolve do you use/select and why?

At MOS we use a commercially available product that has been TGA approved with a great safety profile and clinically research proven results. The medication is a synthetic, non-human, non-animal plant-based form of deoxycholic acid. It is identical to your body’s own natural bile acid. Bile acid is released from your gall bladder to digest a fatty meal.

What are the benefits of Lipodissolve?

Lipodissolve is a great option for dissolving those small areas of unwanted fat that may not be going with other weight loss methods. The results are seen as permanent, unless of course you put on weight, which will accumulate on your body wherever it wishes.

What areas does it treat/what does it treat?

The procedure is best suited for small pockets of fat. The commonest areas we treat are the double chin and jowls.

Who is a good candidate/what age should treatment start?

The treatment can be performed on anyone over the age of 18 who has any small pockets of fat they wish to treat. That being said, there is an ideal candidate. Fat does have to be of a certain amount, as too little or too much will not give ideal results. The treatment works best on moderate to severe double chins.

Also, skin quality and integrity needs to be taken into consideration to obtain optimal results. It is not suitable for those with a lot of sagging skin. For example, some double chins are the result of excess skin and excess fat. Removing the fat will only be half the problem, and could actually give unfavorable results.

Before you can qualify for the procedure, you must meet the criteria below:
  • Not pregnant or lactating
  • Not unwell in any way

How the treatment is performed?

Prior to treatment, our Doctor will discuss the procedure with you and photographs may be taken. The skin being treated will then be cleaned. The area may be numbed with a cream or an injection. The area to be treated will then be marked out with a grid of dots using a temporary tattoo. Once numb, small injections of lipodissolve will be inserted into the area. The treatment should be relatively comfortable. You may feel some tingling, burning or heat sensations. The treatment may take 30-60 minutes.

Is it painful?

The anesthetic cream or injection will make the procedure comfortable. However you may feel a sensation of heat, burning or tingling.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure will take 30-60mins including preparation and numbing time.

Is there any downtime?

Once the numbing wears off, you may experience a sensation of heat / tingling / burning for a few hours which will self-resolve. The main downtime with lipodissolve is swelling. Significant swelling is common within the first 3-5 days after the procedure, often peaking at day 2. During this time the area can also be tender, feel firm, lumpy, wobbly and have some bruising. Bruising, if it appears, can last up to 2 weeks and it can take a good 6-8 weeks to all settle.

What aftercare is required?
  • You can place an ice pack on the treated area to help reduce the swelling.
  • Avoid touching the treated area for 48 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours.
  • Make up can be applied 48 hours after the procedure
  • Simple pain relief such as Panadol / panama / paracetamol can be taken, if required.
  • Arnica cream may be applied to minimize bruising.
How many treatments are required?

The number of treatments required varies on the volume of the initial area of fat being treated. The larger the area of fat, the more treatments that will be required. Most require 3-6 treatments to reach their desired goal.
Each treatment must be a minimum of 4 weeks apart. You can have one treatment and never have it again. Any fat lost from that treatment will remain permanent, unless your weight changes significantly.

How long does the result last and when should it be repeated?

Results are a gradual process that can take 6-12 months to reach its peak. Research has shown the results to be permanent, so once the fat calls have been removed, they will be gone forever. However, any remaining fat cells can accumulate more fat if your weight changes. With weight gain the body does retain fat. We have no control over where this fat accumulates, so it could undo the results. However, as there are less fat cells in this area, it is likely that less fat would be stored in this region.

What if I am unhappy with the results?

Our clients have always been very satisfied with the results. However, further treatments may be required to reach your desired end point.

What treatments work well with this to ensure I look natural?

This treatment is a great standalone treatment. However, for optimal results, the skin quality may be assessed. Often tightening and supporting the skin around the area can help give better support and a superior result. This may include treatments such as laser, mono threads, long threads, dermal filler or skin needling plus an at-home skincare regime to optimize skin health.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects and complications are rare. However, as this is a medical procedure some can occur. The commonest are:

Swelling, tenderness, redness, itching, burning and bruising of the treated area.

Rare side effects include: infection, pigmentation and formation of areas of hardness, uneven smile due to temporary nerve injury, skin necrosis and allergy.

How much does it cost?

At MOS one treatment with lipodissolve costs $1400 or two treatments, purchased upfront, is $2500.
