Cosmelan and Dermamelan

Cosmelan and Dermamelan are in-clinic treatments for pigmentation. They are exactly the same except Dermamelan is a stronger Doctor-only version.

Pigmentation is an extremely common concern that can have a negative impact on quality of life and psychosocial implications.  It is triggered by a number of factors. Sun is the commonest cause as the skin naturally produces pigmentation as a protective mechanism. Other factors include ageing, inflammatory processes such as acne, photosensitizing medications, genetics, hormonal changes and exposure to chemicals e.g. perfumes and essential oils.

The issue with pigmentation is that it can continue to recur after treatment due to factors listed above continuing e.g. sun exposure, hormones, ageing, and genetics.  Pigmentation therefore needs to be treated to reduce its appearance and then maintained with an ongoing plan.

Cosmelan and Dermamalan are depigmentation treatments for pigmentation correction, regulation and control of its reappearance. It prevents pigment being formed by a number of different mechanisms and stimulates epidermal renewal making it a unique superior all-round treatment.

The treatment is a program over 6 months. It involves an initial skin preparation over 2-4 weeks, followed by an in-clinic application of the Cosmelan / Dermamlan mask that is left on for 4-12 hours. A strict home care routine must then be followed for 6 months with intermittent scheduled visits to the clinic for LED lights and facials.

The treatment is highly effective for pigmentation of all causes, including melasma with great results of pigmentation reduction and improved skin texture and glow.

SkinPen FAQ

What preparation do I need before having the treatment?

Cosmelan and Dermamelan is a specific treatment course with many steps.

Before the treatment starts you will have a consultation with one of our therapists.

Your skin will require 2-4 weeks of preparation with skincare at home (which is part of the package).

On the days of applying the Cosmelan / Dermamelan mask we ask you to have followed the 2-4 weeks skin prep program.

  • Please arrive at the clinic with clean skin, no lotions, creams, perfumes, powders and no makeup on.
  • Please ensure you have not had any active tanning in the last 2 weeks.
  • Ensure all spray tan is removed from the skin.
  • If you have a risk of cold sores, start taking antivirals 2 days before the procedure.
  • Do not consume alcohol on the day of the procedure.
  • Drink plenty of water for the 48 hours leading up to the procedure.
  • Do not have any other facials, laser, IPL or RF treatments on the skin for 2 weeks before your treatment.
  • If you are unwell or have any skin infections on the areas to be treated, please call us to reschedule your appointment.
How the treatment is performed?

The treatment is a combination of a skin preparation and maintenance period involving skincare along with in clinic treatments over a 6 month period. The Cosmelan or Dermamelan peel will be applied to the skin at the clinic after a 2-4 week skin prep period. You will need to keep it on for 4-12 hours. You will remove the mask as instructed at home. You will then need to follow a home skin care routine for 6 months and come to the clinic intermittently over that time for some LEDs and facials.

Is it painful?

The procedure isn’t painful. After the mask you may get some skin swelling and peeling. For some, this can give some discomfort.

How long does the procedure take?

The important thing about this treatment is being aware it is a commitment of over 6 months. Pigmentation is very complex. It develops over a long period of time and occurs due to a multitude of factors. It can also return very easily if the aftercare is not ongoing and carefully followed. For that reason, pigmentation removal needs to be done with care, attention and patience.

Is there any downtime?

There is 1-2 weeks of downtime after the Cosmelan or Dermamelan mask has been applied, with Days 2-5 being the worst. The skin will look red, warm, and swollen for the first 3 days and this will be followed with skin peeling from day 3. The program supplies you with the skincare required to treat this downtime. There is no other downtime during the 6 week course.

What is the aftercare required?

As part of the program, you will be provided with all the skincare and instructions to follow for a 6 month period. As a general rule, during the course of the treatment you should:

Not expose yourself to the sun and wear sunscreen during the 6 month program and afterwards for life.

You should only use the products given to you during the course of the treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Yes, there are some side effects but many of them are mild. The side effects are highlighted below:

Scarring on the treatment site, especially if you pick your face

Itchy and tight skin

Mild to moderate discomfort and redness

These side effects can resolve quickly.
